Getting Screened

Many colon cancer deaths can be prevented.  Screening tests can find polyps, which are tiny growths that can become cancerous. The goal in screening is to remove polyps before they can become cancerous.  Colon cancer often appears with no symptoms, so starting at age 50 - and earlier for those with a family history - is critical.  Screening tests can also find colon cancer in its earliest stages when treatment can be most effective.

Several tests are currently available to screen for colon cancer.  Not sure what to ask your doctor about screening? Here is a list that will help you get started.

What are the Symptoms of Colon or Rectal Cancer?

While early colon cancer often has no symptoms, sometimes symptoms do occur. Warning signs to look for include:

* Blood in or on the stool, a change in bowel habits, or stools that are narrower than usual
* General stomach discomfort or frequent gas pains
* Weight loss that occurs despite no change daily habits or diet
* Chronic fatigue

If you suffer from any of these warning signs, please discuss them with your doctor immediately.
