Our volunteers are stationed throughout the park and will help guide you over billion-year-old bedrock on your journey through one of the most unique nature preserves anywhere.
4:00 – 5:00 Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/ Walk – Quarry Park
For the runners, chip timing will provide an accurate system to track your dash through our off road course. You will scamper over trails that are sometimes smooth, sometimes muddy, but always beautiful. You may not want to use best running shoes on this run! The course winds past ponds, quarries, open prairie, wetlands, and has just enough hills to keep your heart pumping. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female 5K run finishers and to the top male and female in multiple age categories.
For the walkers, explore the many natural scenic features of the Quarry Park including oaks and aspens to yellow ladyslippers, Indian paintbrush, prickly pear cactus and the tubercled rein orchid. Man-made features include sizable hills composed of quarried rock remnants (grout piles), and 30 granite quarries, most of which are now filled with water and form picturesque rock-fringed ponds.
