Southeast Indiana Shines in Get Your Rear in Gear Event

A beautiful, crisp, cloudless September morning greeted the 130 runners and walkers who gathered at the Hansen Center for the inaugural Get Your Rear in Gear event to raise awareness and greatly needed funds for colorectal cancer in the Southeast Indiana area.

The event was billed as a Fun Run but that didn’t stop our 40 plus runners from giving it their all.  Everyone said they enjoyed the scenic course and we have to give a shout out to Jeff Benson who covered the course in a mere 20:30, crossing the finish line first overall.

Part of the day’s festivities is honoring those battling colon cancer.  We were so pleased to have Rick Taylor, his wife and grandchildren be a part of the activities.  Rick went home proudly sporting his new “Super Survivor” t-shirt.  Many thanks as well to our largest Team from the St. Nicholas Catholic School, and the Team with the most creative t-shirt, which had to be the “Queens of the Throne” sporting pink colorful shirts and tiaras, from the Hansen Center Surgery unit.

The wonderful volunteers from the Hansen Center and Margaret Mary Hospital made the event a wonderful gathering.  By the determined efforts of the local planning committee and through the generous support of so many sponsors, over $6,500 was raised to help with efforts in colorectal cancer.  Funds will help with efforts in Ripley county, which has the highest incidence of colorectal cancer in Indiana.

The hope is to inspire many others in our host city of Batesville and the surrounding area to get screened for colorectal cancer, and to tell us all about it at next year’s event.
